About Us

Mission Statement

The core purpose of the Counseling and Psychological Services Department at The Scripps Research Institute is to enhance the emotional, behavioral and psychological well-being of the Scripps Research community.  The department strives to facilitate productivity and to enhance the academic and professional success of this community through accessible and timely clinical services.  We also work to meet the needs of the community through education, consultation, referral and outreach.

Meet the Staff

Daphne Lurie, Ph.D.
Counseling Center Director

Dr. Lurie is a California-licensed psychologist and has been at Scripps Research since 2007.  She obtained her doctoral degree in clinical psychology from the University of South Carolina, and her B.A. in psychology from Williams College. She has been a therapist for almost twenty years, and has worked in a range of professional sites, from hospital to university-based settings.  She enjoys seeing both individual clients and couples at Scripps Research, and she has specialty interests in relationship issues, health-related issues, multicultural concerns and identity/adjustment issues.  She is available to see clients throughout the week.

Jan Hill, L.C.S.W. 
Licensed Clinical Therapist

Ms. Hill is a California LCSW (licensed clinical social worker). Jan has served Scripps Research for over 20 years and has particular expertise in the institute’s unique culture and environment.  Jan has  knowledge regarding  community resources available in the San Diego area.  She has interest in job or academic-related concerns, parenting issues, work/family balance and elder care-giving.   Jan generally sees clients on Tuesdays and Wednesdays.  She also serves as the advisor to ScrippsAssists, Scripps Research’s all employee volunteer club.

Holly Wheeler
Department Administrative Assistant

Holly joined the counseling center as an administrative assistant in October of 2006.  She assists in scheduling appointments and provides general administrative support to Counseling Center department staff and programs.  Holly also plays a leading role scheduling speakers for the annual Lunch & Learn workshop series and in ScrippsAssists.
